My first day in Walt Disney World was memorable. So much to see and do and eat and queue for. And when I left the Park at night, high up in the sky I saw a gleaming white ball. It was so big and luminous I could only think: ‘Wow! How do they do that?’ It was, of course, simply a Florida full moon.

Theme parks can get you like that. All that expensive artifice dedicated to us having fun is a world away from real life. No wonder Orlando is so popular. Or is it? UK visitor figures are falling, even though the dollar is wonderfully weak against the pound at the moment. We asked Fred Mawer to take a good look at Florida to help you decide whether you want to brave the immigration queues for a dollop of Disney’s magical pixie dust.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom, remarkable though it is, is a million miles away from the real African experience. The problem with real safari holidays, for me, is that one is not enough. I love them. I’ll put up with the jabs, the sweat, the early starts, the flies and even the odd snake in my tent, anything to be able to gaze at the African sky at night, to hear the hyena howl and to stare an elephant in the trunk. Nigel Tisdall is our man in the khaki suit who guides us through the safari basics to help you get in touch with your inner Attenborough.

Closer to home, we discover what’s happening in Mallorca and Morocco. Mallorca is changing and moving away fast from chips-with-everything holidays, while Morocco could be driving rapidly into mass tourism. Take a fresh look at these classic tourist destinations.

Thank you for your kind words about the features in our first issue. They make me more determined than ever to keep TC magazine a celebrity-light, waffle-free, good-read holiday handbook. Please do keep your comments coming – positive and negative. Your letters and emails are what help keep this a magazine about real holidays for real people.

Till the next time, happy travels.
