Flying with infants...
I will be travelling alone with an infant on a four hour charter flight next month. Is it better to check in early to try to get extra legroom seats so there's room for him to lie down to sleep, or wait until check-in is about to close and hope there is a seat next to an empty space? Any other tips would be grateful!Alison Noble

The airline will not allocate you the seats with extra legroom because these are the seats by the emergency exits and to sit there, passengers have to be ‘able bodied’ in case of an emergency. Travelling with an infant disqualifies you! They may allocate you seats in the middle row if the aircraft has one. It’s always best to check in early for your flight. The best thing to do is to ask your travel agent (a Travel Counsellor I hope) to check with the airline to see what can be done for you.

A night flight is so much better with an infant as, in my experience, they tend to sleep. When you check in, if the plane isn’t full, ask if they will keep the seat next to you free. However if they don’t, ask the cabin crew before you take off if you can move once you’re in the air. You need to ask as soon as you board because it’s likely others will have the same idea. You won’t be given the exit seats with extra legroom because you’re travelling with a baby but check in early and ask if you can have a bulkhead seat.
