My wife and I love all the television shows about archaeology and would like to combine this new passion with a relaxing break abroad. What do you suggest? Harold and Mary West

Why not book a sea view room at the small Hotel Porto Paphos in Paphos, Cyprus? Paphos has fabulous sites with plenty of historical sites in and around the resort. And in Cyprus they drive on the same side of the road as us.

Holiday in Turkey near Ephesus - surely one of the best preserved sites in the world. Ephesus was once the second largest city in the Roman Empire and it is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. There’s plenty to see. The Ampitheatre is grand enough to be used as a concert venue by the likes of Elton John and Michael Jackson. It is possible to visit this wonderful ruined city from most resorts in Turkey, although from some it will be a long, hot journey.

If you want to do more than just look at sites, start with a dig in the UK. Many UK digs suit complete beginners. There’s usually a small fee to pay. Some digs include accommodation but you can always book into a TC recommended hotel. Local universities also hold some lists but places are limited and they tend to go for people with qualifications or loads of experience. If you fancy taking part in a dig somewhere like Egypt, it’s bad news I’m afraid. Such digs are only open to well qualified archaeologists. For sightseeing without digging, you can’t beat Petra in Jordan and, for a short break, Rome.
